Derreenrickard cottage is a charming, stone fronted residence on some 7.68 hectares (19acres) of the most wonderful gardens on the Ring of Kerry. Stunning views of Kenmare Bay and Knockatee Mountain are enjoyed from the house and the magical gardens.
Derreenrickard Cottage was purchased in 1993 by the current owners, who saw substantial potential in the derelict cottage and overgrown land. In 1993 they started work on the gardens to transform them into the beauty they are today. 1996 saw the extension and refurbishment of the house into a pretty stone fronted cottage. The gardens were transformed over the years where flowers, plants and trees were planted from all over the world. Today, the gardens are splendid with paths wrapping around and entwining with benches en route to take full advantage of savouring its beauty.
The house comprises of a stone entrance hall with a guest shower room, a study with a gas fire, large living room with beams and an open stone fire, a bay window which overlooks the captivating gardens and views of Kenmare Bay. The kitchen/dining room also has wonderful views of the gardens and Kenmare Bay. A half door leads from the kitchen to the outside patio. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedrooms also take advantage of the wonderful views.
In 1993 the current owners started clearing the land to see its potential. As they cleared, they began purchasing plants and trees that would achieve a succession of seasonal colour in the planting. This is an informal garden that is well set into the landscape but full of special plants and informed design. The maintenance has been kept to a minimum so that the garden can be fully enjoyed from a stroll around its many paths. When leisurely walking through this peaceful paradise, one feels at one with nature. A step away from the noise and fast paced living of daily lives. A constant array of colour, birds and red squirrels hopping from tree to tree make this a wonderful slice of heaven.
