Ideally located within convenient proximity to a major metropolitan area and thriving international airport is the Winding River Ranch, an offering with recreational appeal like no other in the West. With rich riparian corridor flanking nearly 5 miles of incredible trout-filled river and timbered hillsides that border national forest, this ranch is a true sportsman’s paradise. In addition to the meandering miles of trophy trout fishing on the pristine 4,795-acre ranch, there are 4 lakes totaling approximately 30 acres.
The Winding River Ranch is comprised of 4,832 acres located at the base of the 43,000-acre Buffalo Peaks Wilderness featuring miles of managed brown, brook, cutthroat and rainbow trout habitat on the South Fork of the South Platte. In addition, there is another quarter-mile of high quality fishing on the Northern Fork of the South Fork of the South Platte River. The ranch is situated at the headwaters of the South Fork of the South Platte where the confluence of Rough and Tumble Creek joins with 12-Mile Creek and Sheep Creek. The 4 stocked lakes are teeming with Kamloop rainbow trout, Snake River cutthroat, German brown trout and brook trout. The ranch enjoys expansive views of the snowcapped peaks of the Mosquito and Tenmile Mountain Ranges.
There is an extensive shared boundary with the 1,110,482-acre Pike National Forest that offers access to premier habitat for wildlife viewing or hunting. Wildlife includes elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, wild turkey, black bear, moose, bobcat and beaver. The ranch is home to many avian species including several hawk species, great horned owls as well as bald and golden eagles.
Extensive hunting opportunities are available on the ranch with numerous landowner tags. Included are 12 mule deer tags (2 either sex and 10 antlered) up to 16 elk vouchers (5 either sex and 11 bull elk) and 2 buck pronghorn antelope tags recently received in 2015.
World-class skiing and resort amenities are located approximately 45 minutes away in nearby Breckenridge and accessed via county maintained roads. Private air travel is available at the Central Colorado Regional Airport that is 25 miles away in Buena Vista with an 8,300-foot airstrip. Commercial air service is offered in Colorado Springs (78 miles) and Denver (96 miles). There are several modest, yet comfortable lodging offerings in place on the ranch – each with complete utilities and access.
The Winding River Ranch is partially encumbered with six conservation easements totaling 3,251 acres with The Nature Conservancy. The easements were placed on the property in successive years from 2001 to 2006, and each mirrored the language of the previous one by prohibiting development on the encumbered ground. The easements recognize the significant natural setting of the land and in particular the wetland associated with the South Fork of the South Platte.
Winding River Ranch is undoubtedly one of the premier sporting properties in the West. From the postcard views to the surrounding Mosquito, Kenosha, Tarryall and Park Mountain Ranges, to the wildflower filled meadows the Winding River Ranch is a retreat of unparalleled beauty, which offers an incredible array of sporting pursuits from hiking and mountain biking to trophy caliber big game hunting, and trout fishing both live water and stillwater.
