Description
The property is festooned with ornate carvings and gargoyles, which can be attributed to the famed 19th Century Cork architect WH Hill.
A wide mahogany staircase winds up from the huge entrance hall that still retains all its original features, tiles and statues. Entrance to this unique property is down a long driveway through the woods that line the Ballymahane river that is included in this approx. 6 acre property. The very old, arched redundant Ballytannig Bridge spans its course, at the bottom of the garden beyond the croquet lawn, and bubbles into a lake that is complete with a small island where ducks and a heron roost.
It was built by an engineer friend of the Earl of Bandon who was also responsible for building St Peter's church and shares elements of the architecture.
The ballroom apparently frequented the house for many lavish balls in its heyday. It was extravagantly built with ample use of Cork rose marble inside and out (that has since been quarried out). The Caen Stone fireplaces, gargoyles were apparently brought from a derelict castle in Scotland, so it is an early example of architectural salvage. Many of the historical features, including the 24 sash windows were lovingly and carefully restored to retain their authentic features while modernising them with double glazing.
Gurteen House comes to the open market posing as an ideal family home with approx. 2 kms of Bandon town and with a 25 minute drive of Cork City.
