County Offaly is located in the heart of the Irish midlands. It is named after the ancient Kingdom of U� Failghe and was formerly known as King's County.
The picturesque heritage town of Birr was developed around Birr Castle Estate in the 1800s and comprises an ensemble of handsome Georgian architecture. Its most famous landmark is Birr Castle Demesne, which has been the seat of the Parsons family - the Earls of Rosse - for fourteen generations. Today the Castle Gardens & Science Centre attracts tourists throughout the year.
Birr is renowned for its carefully preserved Georgian heritage and comprises a number of beautiful Georgian terraces including Oxmantown Mall, which includes the recently restored Oxmantown Hall, now the renowned Birr Theatre where all major drama, dance, opera and comedy performances can be enjoyed.
Tullamore (36 km) and Roscrea (16 km) are two large vibrant neighbouring towns with an abundance of good restaurants, hotels, pubs and a variety of boutiques and retail stores. Tullamore is the capital town of the county of Offaly, and arguably the most central town in Ireland, located half way between Dublin and Galway. Tullamore is famous for its Tullamore Dew whiskey which is based on the banks of the Grand Canal and is a great tourist attraction.
The nearby area offers a wide range of quality sporting and recreational activities including, rugby, GAA, swimming, horse riding and tennis. The keen huntsman has a choice of packs, notably the Brosna Foxhounds and The East Galway Foxhounds.
A variety local schooling is available in the area including Mercy Primary School (900m), Oxmantown National School (550m) and St. Brendan's Community School (1 km). Cistercian College Roscrea (19 km), which is an all-boys boarding and day school, is also close by.
Emmet House is an attractive Georgian residence set in one of the finest heritage towns in Ireland. The property dates back to circa 1900 and was previously used as a family home but in more recent years a successful B&B has been run from the it.
