Griffin House forms part of the award winning Burley on the Hill, a Grade I Listed Palladian Mansion, located on the highest point in Rutland, with views over Rutland Water and its adjoining parkland which are breathtaking. Burley on the Hill was constructed in the 1690s by the 2nd Earl of Nottingham who consulted with Sir Christopher Wren regarding elements of the design. Griffin House forms the end of the east wing, creating a Cour d’Honneur around a highly impressive courtyard, the periphery of which measures about a third of a mile. Kit Martin the renowned architect redesigned this glorious building so that it can be enjoyed by many.
Living at Burley on the Hill is a lifestyle choice for those who want to live with the splendour of such a beautiful building and enjoy such fine gardens, grounds and views but dont want the upkeep. The State Rooms can be hired by owners for a nominal amount, perfect for a drinks party or an evening of music. There is a friendly community at Burley with a variety of owners, its an ideal lock and leave so residents will always have tales of their recent travels.
Griffin House is entered from the Cour d’Honneur into the main hall in which the stone and iron work staircase is a magnificent feature. The house has recently been beautifully refurbished with great detail to the provenance of the building. The drawing room is exceptional, its the room with the wow, has vaulted ceilings, original columns, open fireplace, French doors to the gardens and views to the main mansion house. With the addition of a dining room and gallery the ground floor now works perfectly. The dining kitchen has a stone inglenook fireplace, large island, granite surfaces and plenty of room for dining table and sofa. There is also a pantry, and cloakroom.
A mezzanine level provides a guest bedroom and bathroom; whilst on the second floor are the principlal suite with large bedroom, dressing room/ bedroom 5 and ensuite bathroom, and two further double bedroom and a bathroom. The views from all of these rooms are breathtaking.
The driveway leads around the east side of Griffin House to the double garage and parking for a umber of vehicles. An iron work gate leads into the gardens which facing north and west, gets all the afternoon sun. The open fronted coach house (lapsed planning permission to create further accommodation) creates the boundary to the east side with stone walling giving total privacy to the beautifully planted private gardens. With 67 acres of parkland this is a runners paradise.
