Stone House is one of the largest and oldest residences in Broadstairs and it must have seemed a very imposing building with its additional cottages and chapel when it was originally constructed for Sir Charles Raymond of the East India Company in 1764, some 20 years before Pierremont Hall was built. Since that time this impressive Georgian residence has gone through a number of different owners including Dr Tait who became Archbishop of Canterbury while living at Stone House. His wife then used the property to create the first orphanage in Broadstairs and subsequently it became a boys preparatory school that eventually closed in 1969. After this it was converted into luxury apartments in the early 1970s set in the midst of its vast and beautiful grounds with plenty of off road parking for numerous vehicles and surrounded by a high flint wall, providing protection, security and privacy. The developers went to great lengths to restore the building to its former glory replicating the graciousness of the period and preserving the character of the place. This is something that continues to this day and as you drive through the double wrought iron gates into the grounds you can see that the building not only looks as impressive as when it was first constructed but now has all the luxuries associated with 21st century living.
Number 9 is a sumptuous two bedroom apartment on the ground floor accessed via the main front door with a door entry system. It has numerous period features including vast multi pane sash windows with original fold back casement shutters in the hall, lounge and the front double bedroom providing excellent views over the balcony where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine and look across the superb grounds. There is a spacious entrance hall with feature wall panelling that leads to the front bedroom with its arched windows as well as to the large lounge with its high ceiling, ornate coving, parquet flooring and attractive black marble fireplace. This has steps up to the very good sized country style modern kitchen/diner with its high quality and recently installed induction hob, two ovens and a warming drawer together with a Smeg refrigerator and plenty of room for a large table and chairs.
There is a modern shower room and an inner hall leading to the master bedroom with its wall of mirrored wardrobes, fitted shelving and large modern en suite bathroom that has a fabulous bath and separate double shower as well as a corridor that leads back to the kitchen and includes an interesting narrow shelf for displaying pictures and photographs.
