Meath is the 14th largest county in Ireland and the 9th in terms of population. Meath was formed from the eastern part of the former Kingdom of Mide but now forms part of the province of Leinster. The seat of the High King of Ireland was located at Tara Hill, which is only some 7 km / 4.3 miles from Navan. The archaeological complex of Bru na Boinne is around 5,000 years old and includes the burial sites of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, in the north-east of the county and are designated a World Heritage Site. Navan is on the banks of the River Boyne and River Blackwater and is the administrative town of Meath. There are many beautiful walks along the River Boyne and indeed the River Blackwater and the area is famous for the ‘The Boyne Way'. In 2016, Navan had a population of 30,173, making it the fifth largest town in Ireland.
There is excellent racing nearby in Navan and Fairyhouse, with Leopardstown, Naas, Punchestown and The Curragh within easy driving distance. There is also superb walks throughout the area along the River Boyne, Hill of Tara and Newgrange is only a short distance from the town. Golfers are catered for with some magnificent courses close by such as Killeen Castle, Headford, Knightsbrook, Co. Meath and Royal Tara. There is also a large amount of clubs such as the GAA, equestrian centres, athletics and soccer. There is excellent shopping options in the town and main street with a number of restaurants and public houses and both primary schools and secondary schools in the area are highly recommended.
