We moved here some 20 years ago because we fell in love with the cottages, the location and the substantial outbuildings which enabled us to work from home. We could see the beautiful brick cottages beneath the anachronistic additions, so over the years we worked hard to renovate the original architecture, whilst updating and extending these two period cottages into a lovely family home.
The outbuildings similarly have been refurbished structurally with the help of a specialist oak joiner to create useful space for us, whilst adding to the visual appeal of the property and presenting enormous potential for further development. We have planted and landscaped the grounds, incorporating a long drive running along the stream, a wildlife pond, gated rear patio, copious hedging and a meadow full of trees. But like the outbuildings, the land still offers huge scope for further plans and projects.
We have restored and rationalised the living space in the house, fully modernising the utilities and fabric of the cottages, and making use of alcoves with hand-built fitted cupboards which are sympathetic and maximise rather than encroach upon precious space. We have carefully sourced furniture and fittings to ensure our home is as near the original as possible, but with modern practicalities and touches.
We love the peace and tranquillity, especially the local wildlife. We are surrounded by ducks, moorhens, herons, harriers, water voles and more, and serve as a cygnet nursery each spring when swans nest on our pond, which is also teeming with frogs.
The village is very friendly and we can easily wander along to the Rising Sun for a drink or a meal. Preston is just a few minutes away with its village shop, butchers, pub and garden centre with a lovely bistro, then on to Wingham with many shops, pubs, a surgery and The Dog restaurant with rooms. The beautiful medieval Cinque port town of Sandwich is also close by, as is historic Canterbury, and of course the towns, facilities and beaches in Thanet. We are in a stunning rural and holiday location, yet have high speed
rail links close by at Ramsgate, Canterbury and soon at Thanet Parkway.
We are also spoilt for state and independent schools, nurseries and grammars, including St Faith’s at Ash which has an outstanding nursery/prep school just 10 minutes away, and of course Preston Primary School which can be reached on foot through orchards and lanes.
East and West Stourmouth are also linked with lovely footpaths through fields and orchards, along the Little Stour, leading to the beautiful All Saints at Stourmouth, an ancient Saxon church which is a national heritage site.
