Benefiting from an idyllic position on Lake Constance, Schloss Gottlieben has a history dating back to when the Bishop of Constance first built a stronghold with two massive towers here in 1251. Both towers remainedstanding when the home was demolished in 1355 and were integrated into the new moated house, reconstructed in the 15th century. The property has had numerous owners, before Jerôme Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon I, acquired it and transformed the castle into a palatial mansion in theNeogothic style in the 19th century.After further changes from the owner, the world famousopera singer, Lisa della Casa, bought the Schloss with her husband, Dragan Debeljevic, and renovated it.In 1969 Schloss Gottlieben was accorded protected monument status by the federal Ministry of Culture.The estate comprises the structurally Schloss, with 1,423 sq m of living and ancillary space, along with theformer barn, used for commercial purposes, with 477 sq m of living and ancillary space. In addition, the approx. 1.62 ha plot presents the opportunity for a new build with up to 1,319 sq m of gross floor space.
Numbering a good 300 residents and extending to 324,000 square meters, Gottlieben is one of the smallest communities in Switzerland and the smallest inthe canton.
