A hidden gem on a hidden Island in the Mediterranean Sea, Casa Filicudi is an understated elegant traditional Aeolian villa steeped in natural beauty and surrounded by breathtaking panoramas of the sea. Filicudi is one of the most remote islands in the Aeolian Archipelago and its pristine environment is protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Located in the hamlet of Canale above the picturesque village of Pecorini Mare, the villa is bordered by a wonderful olive grove and immersed in a lush terraced garden, providing an exotic atmosphere where indoor and outdoor living spaces converge in a Mediterranean paradise.
Built in the traditional Aeolian style on three terraced levels, the natural luxury of the villa offers spectacular unobstructed views of the surrounding sea from every angle. The ancient stone structure, carefully restored to maintain as much of the original features as possible, with its tiled floors and high ceilings as well as an eagle's nest location above the sea, guarantee maximum cooling and ventilation; moreover, all the bedrooms and indoor sitting room are air conditioned.
The accommodation at Casa Filicudi is carefully balanced to take maximum advantage of the natural environment, providing plenty of comfortable, shaded outdoor living spaces and bright, eclectic elements of interior design. It is extremely private and quiet, with several large covered terraces and dining areas, an outdoor gym and shower and a wonderful multi-level terraced garden. The main body of the house extends on two levels, accessed via a stone staircase that descends to the large covered terrace running along the entire façade of the villa. The terrace boasts a dining area that easily accommodates 12 guests and a well-equipped outdoor sitting room area with sofas, chairs and hammocks. The sea views are stunning, overlooking the village of Pecorini with its distinctive church and olive groves and the port town of Pecorini Mare with its lively harbour. The master bedroom, further sitting room, single bedroom, kitchen and master bathroom are located on this level and accessed through the terrace.
Opposite the main covered terrace is a wonderful sunbathing deck with sun loungers, bordered by an olive grove and boasting a built-in barbecue. The lower level, immersed in the garden planted with lemon, almond, fig and pomegranate trees, gives access to a double bedroom with its own covered terrace, a bathroom and the old olive press now transformed into a flexible bedroom/playroom/sitting room that can comfortably accommodate up to 5 guests. There is a further bathroom and shower room just below and a private outdoor shower. At the side of the house there is an outdoor gym that benefits from the shade provided by the main structure of the house in the mornings and a covered terrace with spectacular views with an outdoor bed/lounger facing the sea, a wonderful spot to read a book and relax. 100 meters down the main path from the house's gate, there is a further independent double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, great for guests requiring a bit more privacy. The interiors of the villa are dominated by the colours white and blue, with splashes of vibrant colours and unique furnishings a testament to the eclectic taste of its art collector owners.
The charming village of Pecorini Mare, with shops, bars, restaurants, a pebble beach and boat harbour can be reached by the ancient footpaths that cross the island in 15 minutes on foot and 5 minutes by car. It is the heart of the island, providing water based activities during the day and a chilled sunset scene at night enlivened by cocktail bars and seafood restaurants. La Cabina sul Mare, a further property that is included in Casa Filicudi is located here, on the first floor of a central building in the main square, a wonderful sitting and dining room with a balcony over the sea which includes a bathroom with a shower, a fully equipped kitchen, laundry area and plenty of sitting room space, the perfect pied-à-terre on the water.
Canale overlooks the villages of Pecorini and Pecorini Mare and is west facing, keeping it lovely and cool in the mornings with spectacular sunset views in the evenings. The main port, located on the other side of the island, is a 15 minutes' drive.
Boat rental with or without a skipper can be arranged separately to explore the sea around the island and venture further afield to visit all other six Islands forming the Aeolian Archipelago. A 4 seater Suzuki jeep is available for rent and there are several outfits on the island that rent scooters.
The Island is reached by hovercraft from Palermo or Milazzo or by private helicopter.
