LOCATION Alicante is a surprising city full of life, contrasts, and beauty. The original name of the city “Lucentum” translates as “City of Light”. It is not only a city but also a port with stunning palm lined beaches and boulevards, huge plazas, beautiful parks. Boasting a good climate, and great nightlife; it is a modern seaside city which has conserved its charm, a place where culture, tradition and history can still be felt.

The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years. The first tribes of hunter-gatherers moved down gradually from Central Europe between 5000 and 3000 BC. Amongst the most notable features of the city are the Castle of Santa Bárbara, which sits high above the city, and the port of Alicante. The latter was the subject of bitter controversy in 2006–2007 as residents battled, successfully, to keep it from being changed into an industrial estate. The Santa Bárbara castle is situated on Mount Benacantil, overlooking the city. The tower (La Torreta) at the top, is the oldest part of the castle, while part of the lowest zone and the walls were constructed later in the 18th century. The promenade Explanada de España, lined by palm trees, is paved with 6.5 million marble floor tiles creating a wavy form and is one of the most lovely promenades in Spain. The Promenade extends from the Port of Alicante to the Gran Vía and ends at the famous statue of Mark Hersch. For the people of Alicante, the promenade is the meeting place for the traditional Spanish paseo, or stroll along the waterfront in the evenings, and a venue for outdoor musical concerts. At the end of the promenade is a monument by the artist Bañuls of the 19th century. Barrio de la Santa Cruz is a colourful quarter of the old city, situated on the south-west of Santa Bárbara castle. Its small houses climb up the hill leading to the walls and the castle, through narrow streets decorated with flags and tubs of flowers. L'Ereta Park is situated on the foothills of Mount Benacantil, on the way to the castle. It runs from the Santa Bárbara castle down to the old part of Alicante and consists of several levels, routes, decks, and rest stops which offer a panoramic view overlooking the city. El Palmeral Park is one of the favorite parks of Alicante's citizens. It includes walking trails, children's playgrounds, ponds and brooks, picnic tables and an auditorium for concerts. Just a few kilometres from Alicante on the Mediterranean Sea lies Tabarca island. What was once a haven for Barbary pirates is now a beautiful tourist attraction.

In Alicante you can enjoy the lively promenades and shady tree-lined boulevards, where you can sit at a street café sipping a ‘granizado’ (crushed ice drink) or typical ‘horchata’ (similar to chilled almond milk) and watch the world go by. Wander around the interesting old town streets which are lined with boutique shops and trendy restaurants, visit the shopping malls, enjoy the modern marina and or spend the day relaxing on one of the glorious beaches. In the evening have fun at one of the many night venues, the sophisticated Costa Blanca Casino, elegant marina restaurants and cocktail bars, nightclubs with chill-out zones and infinity pools, enjoy tapas in one of the lively bars in the old quarters or chill at one of the typical ‘chiringuito’ beach bars.

Alicante is a university town with a brilliant nightlife. There are dozens of popular pubs in the old town, some great nightclubs, and smart venues by the marina where you can dance until dawn to the sound of Latin American vibes. On summer nights, chill out at a beach party on San Juan beach or Postiguet beach. The city has a great variety of shows, open air entertainment and concerts, theatres, and cinemas, as well as a varied cultural programme.

Every summer in Alicante, a two-month-long programme of music, theatre and dance is staged in the Paseo del Puerto. It is also famous for its fiestas throughout the year. The most important festival, the Bonfires of Saint John (Fogueres de Sant Joan), takes place during the summer solstice. This is followed a week later by five nights of firework and pyrotechnic contests between companies on the urban beach Playa del Postiguet. Another well-known festival is Moros i Cristians in Altozano or San Blas district. Overall, the city boasts a year-round nightlife for the enjoyment of tourists, residents, and a large student population of the University of Alicante. The nightlife social scene tends to shift to nearby Playa de San Juan during the summer months.

The coastline of Alicante has 15 kilometres of fabulous beaches – the majority with blue flag status. Playa Postiguet is Alicante’s main beach, close to the city centre, old quarters, and main boulevards. It is a popular sandy beach just along from the leisure harbour and in front of Santa Barbara Castle. There is a variety of facilities for water sports, beach games, play areas, disabled access, etc. It is close to the tram line which links Alicante to the other northern Costa Blanca resorts. Y can take a stroll along the shady, seafront esplanade where there is invariably something fascinating to watch or activities to take part in, exhibitions, kite competitions, naval displays, boating events, beach gym, tight rope walker etc., you will never get bored and you will also find a great choice of eateries and street cafés to enjoy, and many craft stalls to browse. Three kilometres northeast of the city, Albufereta beach is located between Serra Grossa and Tossal de Manises, in an area of archaeological remains, the historical origin of Alicante. It is a sandy beach around 500 metres long, the calm sea is safe for swimming. Busy during summer months, there are restaurants, shops, and various amenities close by. There’s a children’s play area, and a floating platform in the sea and disabled access facilities in summer. Almadraba Beach is a quiet beach with golden sands and calm, transparent waters. There is a shady picnic area, and a beach bar in the summer. It is the ideal place to spend a relaxing day and to watch the fabulous sunsets and a great place for water sports, the ‘Club Náutico Alicante Costa Blanca’ is located nearby. Located between Almadraba and San Juan beaches, there are a succession of sheltered rocky coves which can be reached on foot. The crystal-clear sea is great for scuba diving and snorkelling. Cala Cantalar is located near the lighthouse; it is surprisingly quiet even in the height of the season, a discreet nudist beach where you can commune with nature. Cala Palmera is a slightly smaller cove also popular with naturists. The beach of San Juan offers seven kilometres of fabulous golden sands extend from Cabo de la Huerta to El Campello. A wide, non-crowded beach with gently sloping sands, San Juan is a fun for all the family. Facilities include invalid access points, children’s play areas and activities such as beach-volley. It is also a great spot for windsurf or kitesurf, and other water sports. There is a smart beachfront promenade, many popular restaurants serving local cuisine, and a variety of interesting craft stalls. The popular ‘chiringuito’ beach bar café is open till late in the summer. Just five kilometres south of the city near a quiet residential area, you will find Urbanova beach. This is a magnificent, relatively unspoilt peaceful beach with rolling sand dunes, and zones for naturists. Also known as Saladares beach, this is a wetland area of salt marshes. About 2 km in length, there is a promenade with restaurants, shops, play areas and disabled access in the summer months. If you want the Mediterranean to yourself, head over to the island of Tabarca. This small island was one of the first protected nature and marine reserves created in Spain. It is the perfect place for a day out to enjoy the history, sea, beaches, and fabulous local gastronomy! There are catamaran services from Alicante and Santa Pola.

You can even charter a yacht with crew to take you on a fabulous day out to Tabarca Island where you can picnic or lunch at one of the informal beachfront restaurants on the island.
