LOCATION Altea is one of the most beautiful and sustainable towns in Spain and its viewing points are renowned. The Old Town is full of charm with cobbled streets to wander through finding fabulous local family-run shops whilst stumbling across some historic buildings. Along the way you will see remains of the ancient walls and gateways which protected the hilltop town from pirates.
The beautiful Plaza de la Iglesia church square with its blue domed church, the Virgen del Consuelo, taking pride of place. Although the church itself was built in the 19th century with work being completed in 1910, there has been a place of worship here for more than 900 years. It also bears the battle scars of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s when one of the bell towers was destroyed by Franco's men. Plaza de Iglesia is a lovely, traditional Mediterranean square and is considered the heart of Altea. The atmosphere is bohemian and became famous for its artistic tendencies in the 1960s, attracting many musicians, artists and writers from all around Europe. Nowadays, Altea is the centre of cultural life on the Costa Blanca with its new Arts Centre and Concert Hall (Palau Altea Centre d’Arts). Alongside its many antique shops, there is the orthodox church of Saint Michael built according to traditional Russian architecture and consecrated in 2005.
Altea has a reputation for its famous restaurants located in the Old Town and along the wonderful seafront promenade offering both Mediterranean cooking and international cuisine. In addition to the many restaurants in Altea the area of the Costa Blanca offers an enormous range of restaurants and eating houses from top Michelin star restaurants, trendy upmarket Marinas bars and clubs to beachside snack bars covering all prices and all types of gastronomic styles.
Altea has no less than nine beaches. La Roda, Cap Negret, Cala de la Barra Grande, Cap Blanc, El Soyo, La Olla, Mascarat Norte, Mascarat Sur La Baretta and Solsida. Altea celebrates many “Fiestas” and during the last week of September, the biggest parties of Altea and the Moors and Christians parades take place. The streets are alive with different bands, costumes, fireworks, bands and famous singers who sing and play in verbenas until dawn. In August you can enjoy the magnificent Castell de L'Olla, an unforgettable and spectacular firework display that is launched from platforms at sea an experience not to be missed.
Altea is renowned for its upmarket designer shops and boutiques and due to the cosmopolitan nature of the area of Costa Blanca, the Spanish educational system has been complemented by a large number of prestigious schools, providing a wide range of private academic education from preschool through to high school, with possibilities for multilingual, bilingual and boarding, etc.
The area has excellent communications, with all the Mediterranean coast by the A-7 motorway and the peninsular centre by the A-3 motorway. Altea is almost halfway between the airports of Alicante (61 km.) And Valencia (116 km.). By sea, only 65 miles from Ibiza and Formentera.
