Along the way you will see remains of the ancient walls and gateways which protected the hilltop town from pirates.
The beautiful Plaza de la Iglesia church square with its blue domed church, the Virgen del Consuelo, taking pride of place. Although the church itself was built in the 19th century with work being completed in 1910, there has been a place of worship here for more than 900 years. It also bears the battle scars of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s when one of the bell towers was destroyed by Franco's men. Plaza de Iglesia is a lovely, traditional Mediterranean square and is considered the heart of Altea. The atmosphere is bohemian and became famous for its artistic tendencies in the 1960s, attracting many musicians, artists and writers from all around Europe. Nowadays, Altea is the centre of cultural life on the Costa Blanca with its new Arts Centre and Concert Hall (Palau Altea Centre d’Arts). Alongside its many antique shops, there is the orthodox church of Saint Michael built according to traditional Russian architecture and consecrated in 2005.
