An exceptional example of a classic Georgian Townhouse with Robert Kime interiors.
This is an exceptional example of a classic Georgian townhouse, located in one of the grandest terraces in Edinburgh's New Town. The current owners worked with the world-renowned interior designer Robert Kime to create a beautiful home, unlike any other in Edinburgh.Robert Kime, who passed away in 2022, worked on many prestigious projects during his career, including Highgrove and Clarence House for the then Prince Charles.Designed in the 1820s by the celebrated Scottish architect William Henry Playfair, the house is laid out over four floors, with the garden level set up as a self-contained two-bedroom flat. The ground and first floors provide extensive, elegant living and entertaining space. The interior design, along with the prominence of the period details, creates an extraordinary atmosphere and a fine balance between the grandeur of the rooms and a feeling of comfort and liveability.Of particular note are the barrel-vaulted entrance hall, which gives an immediate impression of the rest of the house and is unlike any other Edinburgh townhouse. The first-floor drawing room, which occupies the full width of the building and features three sash and case windows with beautiful views. The room has elaborate plasterwork, a stunning marble fireplace, and has been decorated and furnished in a style befitting the house's architecture. The main house has five bedrooms, including a wonderful principal bedroom featuring a dressing room and an en suite bathroom with a solid marble bath.Mews HouseThere is a mews house available by separate negotiation which consist of a triple garage and a charming one bedroom flat.Outside Space & Regent GardensOutside, there is a large terraced garden, which benefits from direct access—via a gate at the top of the garden—to Regent Gardens. This beautifully kept communal garden features a tennis court, a playground and several acres of lawns, pathways, and mature treesRobert Kime.Robert Kime, uniquely amongst interior designers, rose to eminence through antique dealing, textile collecting, and a passion for creating spaces that reflect a sense of place and suitability. While studying Medieval History at Worcester College, Oxford, he found himself selling antiques to his professors and dons, travelling weekly to nearby towns to buy furniture and accessories to sell out of his college rooms—thus establishing his future career.Embracing a passion for travel, Kime frequently visited Egypt, Israel, Italy, France, and Turkey. Wherever he went, he immersed himself in the local culture, returning home with both stories and objects that captured his experiences. From archaeological digs in Masada to the simple act of buying a headscarf from a woman on a hot, dusty bus journey, his adventures shaped his work and friendships for life.Back in the UK, antique dealing was later joined by interior decoration (a title he never fully embraced, despite his many projects). Over time, he developed a collection of fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, lighting, rugs, and accessories, inspired by his ever-evolving archive and favourite objects. As a dealer, Kime bought things purely because he liked them, using them to tell his story. Though he would often sell beloved pieces, confident he might find them again, some objects became so deeply associated with him that they moved from house to house, always holding a place of pride and continuing to tell their story.Source: robertkime.com
