For a mountain hideaway
Mount Yotei, an active stratovolcano on the island of Hokkaidō, is one of the most well-known mountains in Japan and a popular skiing destination. This ready-furnished, four-bedroom chalet is located at the foot of Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area, facing the famous mountain. On the market for $4.2mn, the home draws from modern and traditional Japanese design and sits in an isolated position surrounded by mature trees.
For views of Mont Blanc
The large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area on the first floor of this recently built six-bedroom chalet in the French Alps is centred around a fireplace that can be enjoyed from all four sides. One side of the room opens out on to a terrace with views of Mont Blanc while the master suite on the other side of the chalet, with its private balcony, looks towards the Aravis mountains. The property has a lift and a small outdoor swimming pool. The chalet, which is on the market for €2.995mn, is 1.4km from the nearest ski lift.
For an Alpine base
This seven-bedroom property (also main image above) is situated on the lower Italian slopes of the Matterhorn, the distinctive peak that marks the border with Switzerland. As well as being within easy reach of several ski resorts — on both sides of the border — the chalet is well-equipped for apres-ski, as it features a spa, with a 10-metre-long swimming pool, gym, sauna and massage room, an outdoor Jacuzzi and a cinema room. All seven bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and the property, which is on the market for €24mn, is well placed for hiking, wild swimming in the nearby lakes and Italy's highest 18-hole golf course in the warmer months.
For an outdoor pool
This four-bedroom property is situated a short drive from the popular Swiss winter sports destination of Villars-sur-Ollon — and is a short walk from a cable car that will take you to the extensive Villars-Gryon-Diablerets ski area. The chalet was renovated in 2018 and features a sauna and heated outdoor swimming pool that can be used year round. The property is on the market for SFr5.5mn ($6mn).
For skiing right from your front door
Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America and is consistently ranked as one of the best ski destinations in the world. This modern six-bedroom home, situated in an isolated part of the Blackcomb mountain, can be accessed on skis in the winter and is within walking distance of Whistler Village as well as Lost Lake and the Chateau Whistler golf course, for entertainment in the summer. The property — which is on the market for C$17.95mn ($13.3mn) — is notable for its large living space, open to the landscape through large windows on three sides, with 24ft-high ceilings and a distinctive see-through circular fireplace.
